AI Poster Design Workflow: 7 Steps from Copy to Campaign-Ready Artwork

Great posters are not just pretty pictures: they carry a message hierarchy, fit the placement and leave room for type. This 7-step workflow connects concept, ratio, prompts and layout so anyone can ship campaign-ready artwork.

Start with copy hierarchy, not artwork

Most failed posters are not ugly; they simply do not tell the eye where to look. Before generating anything, split the copy into three layers:

  • Headline: one line of value, e.g. "50% off everything".
  • Subhead: the constraint, e.g. "Nov 1–11 only".
  • Call to action: "Shop now" or "Scan to claim".

Once those exist you know how much empty space the artwork needs, where the subject sits and which direction the composition should flow. Generate first and squeeze copy in later, and you usually get a pretty image that cannot be used.

Choose the ratio by placement, never crop later

PlacementRatioTypical sizeSafe zone
Social banner2.35:11080×4608% top and bottom
Feed (landscape)16:91920×1080Right side for copy
Feed (vertical)9:161080×1920Bottom quarter for CTA
Story / cover3:41080×1440Top 15% for title
Roll-up banner1:3800×2000Bottom 20% for QR

Generate each ratio separately rather than cropping one square. Changing the ratio changes the composition: vertical needs a downward eye path, landscape needs left-right zoning.

The 7-step workflow

  1. Set the goal: acquisition, promotion or brand awareness — it decides visual density.
  2. Write the copy: three layers as above, headline under about 12 words.
  3. Lock the ratio: choose once, never change mid-way.
  4. Pick one motif: a concrete object or scene, not "tech feeling".
  5. Generate the base art: state where the empty space is, e.g. "large empty area on the right".
  6. Set type: two fonts, three colors maximum.
  7. Shrink test: view at quarter size on a phone; if the headline is unreadable, remove elements.

Six copy-paste poster prompts

1) Promo key visual: deep purple to violet gradient, gold gift boxes with ribbon splash,
dynamic light streaks, large empty area on the right, commercial poster, ultra detailed
2) Minimal brand: cream background, single geometric subject, soft shadow, generous negative space
3) Tech launch: navy to black gradient, flowing blue particles, glowing central platform
4) Food launch: warm orange backdrop, overhead food close-up, steam and gloss, title zone on top
5) Festival: red and gold palette, lanterns and bokeh fireworks, centered empty space
6) Social cover: pastel color blocks, flat illustration, silhouette figure, title zone on top

Four tricks that make a poster look premium

  • Subtract: one focal point per poster; everything else recedes.
  • Unify the light: even abstract shapes need one lighting direction.
  • Limit colors: primary, secondary, neutral, plus one accent.
  • Let it breathe: at least one line-height of padding around type.
Quick check: convert the poster to grayscale. If the headline is still the strongest contrast point, the hierarchy works.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI posters be published directly?

Use the artwork as-is, but add type in a layout tool. Generated text often contains typos and distortion, especially for Chinese; keeping copy in a design tool gives you control.

Why is there never enough empty space?

State it explicitly, e.g. "right 40% is a flat empty area with no elements", and avoid words like full-bleed, packed or rich detail, which push the model to fill the frame.

How do I keep six sizes consistent?

Finalize one key visual, then attach it as a reference and regenerate per size, changing only the ratio and the empty-space direction.

Turn the workflow into a team asset

Once the flow is smooth, document it: one prompt, one ratio and one layout rule per placement. New team members then ship usable artwork without needing an art director.
